Sr. Orla Treacy – International Woman of Courage

Former chaplain of Loreto College, Crumlin Road and co-founder and Head Administrator of the Loreto Rumbek mission in South Sudan, Sr. Orla Treacy was honoured on March 7th at a prestigious ceremony in Washington D.C.

Sr. Orla was recognised among nine other women from around the world as an International Woman of Courage. This award is bestowed each year on women who have demonstrated exceptional courage and leadership in advocating for peace, justice, human rights, gender equality, and women’s empowerment.

The awards, which were celebrated at a ceremony hosted by U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo featured a speech by First Lady Melania Trump.

Sr. Orla was chaplain in Loreto College, Crumlin Road from 2003-2006 where she played a lasting role in developing the pastoral and spiritual life of our school. Her sincerity and warmth is fondly remembered by both staff and students who had the pleasure to work with her during her time in Crumlin.
