Transition Year
Transition Year is a one year optional programme. It provides a bridge to enable students make the transition from Junior to Senior cycle. It encourages personal and social development and recognises the need for students to grow in independence. Transition Year fosters academic achievement as students prepare for a Leaving Certificate Programme, further study and adult and working life. It encourages the development of a wide range of transferable critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills.
The aim of Transition Year is to promote the personal, social, educational and vocational development of the students and to prepare them for their role as autonomous, participative and responsible members of society
The Programme
The school devises its own programme. This is done in accordance with the Department of Education & Science guidelines and school and community resources.
In addition to the core subjects of Religion, English, Irish, Maths, Science and French, the students have the opportunity to participate in many different classes and activities: drama, music, ECDL, public speaking, sport and fitness, charity work, work experience, craft and design, , the Young Social Innovators programme, development education, theatre and other trips, to name but a few. In late September, the classes go to the Aran Islands for three days. |

Young Social Innovators Competition |

In 2007, a team of Transition Year students in Loreto College Crumlin received an award for their Young Social InnovatorsProject entitled One for All, All for One. The project identified three problems – ignorance, lack of resources, poor coordination of services – all linked with poor planning, which are limiting the development of an inclusive society in Ireland . One of the solutions – a series of games for schools to use to combat ignorance – has been piloted in the school and may be developed further in 2008/09.
This year's students are currently researching five social issues and preparing projects on them: eating disorders, the elderly and technology, the influence of celebrities and the media on young people, computer games and internet addiction and animal cruelty.
